We have been going on mini shakedown sails to check out systems and ensure everything is in proper working order for the last few months leading up to our departure. A couple weekends back we sailed across to Silva bay in the Gulf Islands, a great trip across until it was time to navigate a narrow pass entering the bay. It was at this time we realized the depth sounder was definitely not functioning correctly. …..depth sounder reading 600ft……. hum that’s odd, since when we look over the side we see the bottom. Depth sounds not working properly, no problem I will just pull the sensor from the thru hull and check it once docked. I know some you are thinking “it’s going to dump a lot of   water into the boat with a 1 ½ hole open 3 ft underwater”. Nope, it has a cool little flap on it that slams shut as the sensor comes out. So I check the sensor and sure enough it was painted over during our last haul out/bottom paint. Cleaned it, reinstalled, checked it, sounder reads 11ft s

Welcome back to the blog of Double Deuce. Since we are saying adios to home we thought we would reflect a little. It is funny how things work out in life, I have always been a planner/dreamer. I truly believe that if you think about something enough it will morph it's self into a plan. We always knew that one day we would sail to warmer climates in pursuit of a tropical lifestyle. It feels surreal that our dream has started today.  For the last 8 years we have spent countless hours and dollars (we don't add up receipts....ever) working toward our goal of sailing south. The date has been quickly approaching, work has ended, and the day has come. We have officially left Burrard Yacht Club, North Vancouver to head to warmer climates.   Some of you have heard the story as to the naming of Double Deuce, and some haven't. We are often asked on the docks as we travel around how the name and logo came to be. It was also a popular question at our send off party this pa

Our Journey to Today

To start off our S/V Double Deuce blog lets talk about the history of how we got to this point today. We started out like most fellow boaters, a smaller boat with dreams of something larger. We believe they refer to this as 4 foot-itis. We have progressed from a 27, to a 34, to a 40, to our current boat.   We had a 40 ft X-yacht, also called Double Deuce, that we raced and cruised extensively around the BC coast.   In 2004 we raced the boat to Maui in the Victoria to Maui yacht race. After the Vic-Maui we made a number of alterations to the boat in hopes of making it the offshore boat of our dreams. The one in which we needed to cruise in tropical places and scuba dive the beautiful oceans we had always dreamed of exploring.   I believe it was 2007 when we decided the X-yacht was not going to work for us.   This triggered our search for the elusive dream boat, one which had everything we needed to go off shore but also had a dollar amount that fit our wallet. In the fall o
